Sitemaps are what search engines rely on to know about what pages are available on a website and when they are updated. It's a simple XML file, which you can create as you build your website, but a far easier method is to use a sitemap generator, which does all the work for you. An excellent choice is G-Mapper, due to its efficiency and approachable design. It spiders your websites automatically and provides HTML, XML, RSS and text sitemaps, compatible with Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines. It works fast, and it is capable of retrieving a huge amount of information.

G-Mapper is absolutely free and maintained through donations. It comes in a small package, which makes it easy to download and install. There is no need to install any third-party tools or services, and you won't notice any significant impact on your system's performance one you run the application.

Generating a sitemap is a simple operation, even for novice users. You just need to point to a website and tell the program what data to gather. This is done on a tabbed window, which shows up immediately after you start a new project. Besides specifying a website's address, you can also set the software to include modification dates and frequency, to gather images of all kinds or of a specific format, ignore certain query string parameters and much more. The software logs everything in a local folder of your choice, but it can also upload the data directly to an FTP server.

Once you've made your initial settings, you can bring up the software's built-in spider and start gathering data right away. The URL to every page on the website will appear on the main user interface, along with its title, description and other information. Images are listed as thumbnails, together with a few other details, on a separate tab, and you can also find another tab with errors and descriptions if the software encounters any, so you can know what went wrong and why.

G-Mapper lets you update individual fields manually, but you can also batch edit them if you need to modify a date, priority or update frequency for a large number of entries. Furthermore, if you need to use the sitemap in other applications, for other purposes, you can just hit the Export button, tell the application where to store it, and you will have all the necessary files in no time.

If you want search engines to know what's on your website, you can rely on G-Mapper to create a map quickly and effortlessly.

Pros

You can generate a sitemap with just a few clicks. The sitemaps you generate are compatible with Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. The software lets you edit or batch edit entries and upload your sitemap to your server via FTP.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to address.
